A baby-friendly home: a room-by-room checklist
No home is “child-proof against everything”, but a quick room-by-room review helps you forget nothing. This checklist is a general reminder: it does not replace guidance from your paediatrician or the authorities on child safety, nor the presence of an adult.
Living room
- Corners and edges of the coffee table and low units: roll and corner guards.
- Small and fragile objects out of reach; cables tidy.
- Tall furniture stable: follow the manufacturer’s fixing instructions.
Kitchen
- Drawers and doors within reach: drawer locks are included in several kits.
- Cleaning products and sharp objects up high or locked away.
Bedroom
- Corners of bedside tables and chests of drawers: soft corner guards.
- Cot as per the manufacturer’s instructions; no unnecessary items in the cot.
Bathroom, doors and stairs
- Medicines and personal-care products out of reach.
- Doors: a door stopper helps stop them slamming.
- Stairs and level changes: consider solutions suited to your home and to official guidance.
Do not try to do it all in one day: start with the rooms where your child spends most time (see where to begin) and repeat the round when they reach a new stage, since every month brings new skills.
Protectors help soften bumps against edges and corners. They do not remove every risk and do not replace adult supervision.
